Foodstuffs North Island Head Office

Status: Complete

Project Highlights:

In 2021, George Grant Engineering (GGE) was honoured as a finalist in the Steel Construction New Zealand (SCNZ) Excellence in Steel Awards. This recognition was for our pivotal role in the construction of the Foodstuffs North Island Head Office, a project valued at over $3m.

Design and Execution:

This state-of-the-art 8,500 sqm office building is celebrated for its innovative design, featuring a curved, flowing roof that integrates seamlessly with the earth bunds at both ends, echoing the natural contours of the surrounding coastal landscape. The use of steel was critical in achieving the complex lines and architectural visions of the structure, supporting the glass reinforced concrete façade and concrete feature panels that define its aesthetics.

Project Challenges:

The main challenge was to execute the curved design while maintaining structural integrity and aesthetic coherence. GGE’s advanced steel fabrication techniques were instrumental in crafting the building’s distinctive roof and ensuring its harmonious blend with the landscape.

Team Collaboration:

The project was a collaborative effort with Hawkins as the builder and contributions from 3D Steel as the Steel Modeller, BGT Structures as the Structural Engineer, and Monk Mackenzie as the Architect. Auckland Airport served as both the developer and owner of the project, guiding the vision and requirements.

Outcome:

The Foodstuffs North Island Head Office stands as a testament to GGE’s commitment to engineering excellence, quality, and safety. Our work not only met the intricate architectural demands but also set new standards for innovative use of structural steel in commercial construction.

Environmental Considerations:

Throughout the project, GGE maintained a focus on sustainable construction practices, ensuring minimal environmental impact and enhancing the building’s integration with its coastal setting.
